The collection comprises John Sargent's business papers, including records from his hardware store (1855-1875), and many letters and reports relating to Pillsbury's land, lumber and flour milling interests. Miscellaneous papers include letters dealing with the grasshopper plague, and arranging relief and seed shipments to its victims. Political papers include nominations for appointment. Personal papers include family bills and some correspondence between members of the family.

John Sargent Pillsbury was born in Sutton, New Hampshire, and came to the village of St. Anthony MN in 1855 to open a hardware business. 15 years later, he began his flour milling enterprise, which became one of the largest in the world. In 1863, Pillsbury began to take an interest in the University of Minnesota, which had been closed by debt.
